Pups On The Move

This is one of my favorite pictures. It's one of the last times that the litter was all together.

New Homes for Three Pups

Yesterday, three pups--Orange, Blue and Red--left for new homes. It was a bittersweet day. T. Floyd, Deca's U.S. National Champion trainer, visited the pups from New Jersey and declared that they were "excellent." He said that they were all well-developed, healthy, happy, friendly, well-socialized and confident, and he selected the three pups for new homes.

The nest is not quite empty, but it's not as crazy as before. Deca seems o.k.

The puppies can't stay forever! T. will see that they have very good homes. And, who knows, we might see them again in the show ring.

No Fear!

The pups went outside outside today. Yesterday too! They took it in stride, and there were no complaints. These are some of those pics.

Mom's looking out!

Deca watches her pups play...from the safety of the other side of the pen!

Good puppy!

The pups are good. It's just getting harder and harder to slow them down to photograph them.

Saturday's Pup

Here's a picture from Saturday!

Slow down, you move too fast!

Imagine my surprise when I started to go down into the basement and I discovered that all six of the pups were out of their pen, and half of them were climbing up the stairs to the kitchen. Not good.
New meaning to bright eyed and bushy tailed!

The Weekend Report

It was a good weekend for the pups. On Saturday, I hosted a party for a large group of friends in my running group. Fortunately, for all concerned, the weather was spectacular. Everybody was anxious to see the pups who didn't disappoint with their playful inquisitiveness! Maybe some of those visitors will take one of the pups, who are now five weeks old.

My hope is that the pups will be totally weaned by next weekend--six weeks old. They're now fed three times a day, and their food is become more and more solid. Not surprisingly, they're eating a lot more. I've included some unmoistened dry puppy food with their softened food, and they gobbled that down as well. So that's very good progress.

Deca seems content--or resigned--to let me provide their food and water. It looks like having six hungry pups mobbing you for food is a bit much for her.

What else? Early last week, I introduced a largish plastic ball into their play area. Orange was the first one to "play" with it, then Green. I'm sure that means something good!

Pictures to follow soon.

The Force Is With Her!

Today's dilemma...how to keep the pups confined in their space? The problem is that if I leave the gate to the Xpen open so that Deca can check on her pups, the pups climb over the gate frame and take off. "Green" and "Yellow" are the ones I find most often "out there." If I close the gate, then Deca breaks into the X-pen to check on things. I don't have a solution to this yet, other than to close the gate and to keep Deca away from the pen. That's not sustainable, since she has a very strong instinct to check on the pups and to clean up their pen! The "force" is strong within this Deca Haus Juris!

The pups, for their part, seem to love climbing out of the pen, and going for a tour of the basement. Very inquisitive, they. And incredibly cute. Some of them seemed to have learned that they can get mother's milk if they get out the pen, and catch up to mom. I haven't seen her nurse the gang together since the day before yesterday. The pups are being weaned! Off mother's milk and on to increasingly solid food.

To Drink Or Not to Drink

Today's development was water! Up until now, I haven't given the pups water to drink. I've been relying on Deca to provide to all the nutrients and liquid that the pups need. But, as I'm weaning them off of mother's milk and on to solid food, I thought it was time to give them water to drink..or not to drink. Must have been good timing, since all of them started to drink right away. I didn't see it, but evidently, one of them also has started to swim!

One more thing. These puppies have amazing colors!

Will The Circle Be Unbroken

For the puppies' first song, to accompany their morning gruel, I chose The Allman Brother's "Mountain Jam" from their album, "Eat a Peach." For Rolling Stones' take on what I think is one of the finest rock albums of all time, check out this link to Tony Glover's 1972 review.

Thanks to Duane Allman (slide guitar and lead guitar), Gregg Allman (vocals, organ), Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums) and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums).

Late Night Bonus!

Here are two more pics as a late night bonus.

Pup Pics

I haven't posted many puppy pics recently, as opposed to the several puppy videos. So here are a few for your viewing pleasure. If you're interested, all of the photos were taken with a Canon Elph 550, a digital point and shoot, ISO 400, with available light. The videos are shot with the same digital camera which explains their lack of detail. Sometime this week, I hope to arrange a formal puppy portrait event. Stay tuned.
