The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

The play's the thing!

Things are happening fast in Deca's den!

Today, the pups got their first taste of solid food. Ok, not really solid, but the first thing that they could eat--or lick--that wasn't mother's milk. I had to comb the Deca archives to see what I had done for the puppy gruel for the first litter. Once accomplished, I put on my chef's hat and whipped up a first rate gruel for Deca's pups.

I've put a bowl of water in the pen area, so they could drink, when they were ready. Some of them are drinking, others are swimming, which is par for the course.

All of them are running around now, and it's clear that they can see where they're going, and what they're doing. When they're not sleeping, and thankfully, they do sleep, they're playing with each other and learning their puppy skills.

One of them--Green--seems to be the most adventurous. This afternoon, when I went down to visit them, he was out of the pen area, and slowly roaming around the basement. Apparently, this didn't faze Deca, who was just watching him...or her. And now, that he--or she--knows how to get out, he keeps escaping.

The dilemma again--how to let Deca get in to feed and clean her pups, while stopping the little one from making a run for it.

The Brave New World

At three weeks old, I am pleased to report that the State of the Puppies is good.

While most of their time is still spent sleeping and eating, all of the pups can walk a bit and all of them are playing with their brothers and sisters.

It will only be another day--or perhaps just a few more hours-when the most adventurous of the pups climbs out of the whelping box and into the brave new world of the blue tarp which is now down outside the box.

Anticipating puppies running around everywhere, I've set up the perimeter fence, so puppies will stay in, but Deca can go in and out. This will work for a while, but we know, from the last litter, that it won't last for long.

This morning, I put on colored ID collars on the pups: Gray, Blue, Red and Green.

Pictures to follow.

Pup Update - Two Weeks Old

A quick puppy update...pictures and video to follow.

The pups are great. While they can't really walk yet, they are able to pull themselves up with their front legs, and push off with the back legs. It's like walking, only different.

Their eyes opened on Thursday, but I don't know that they can see anything yet.

On the other hand, they seem to be playing with each other. Well, maybe they're playing, it's like playing, only different.

I don't think that they really hear anything yet. If they did, they would hear their brothers and sisters making some really loud noises.

With Deca's permission, I've been holding them, for a few minutes each day.

It's about time for them to get their ID collars on...
