My Dog (1993-2008)

With sadness, we report that "Harold Houdi Dawg" aka My Dog passed away today in Moshi, Tanzania. He was 14 years and 8 months of age.

My Dog came out of a litter of puppies sired by Maryland’s Cotton Pick’n Cropper from Ocean City, Maryland, a National Field Trials Champion who also sired a huge number of Yellow Labrador Retrievers in the hunting/field trial world.

My Dog was trained by Neil Selby of Remington, Virginia, and became a NAHRA (North American Hunting Retriever Association) “Master Hunting Retriever”. Among the things, he could do were retrieves on land and water, “marking”(where they fell) up to three birds at a time, hand signals to be guided to the “blind” (unseen where it fell) bird. While training at Neil Selby’s, My Dog sired a couple of litters, and was also featured on the cover of “Virginia Wildlife” magazine in July 1997.

My Dog took part in hunt tests in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and West Virgina, as well as California, Arizona and Oregon – (his trainer was Phil Deschene out of Ontario, CA). In 1999 My Dog qualified to take part in a National Invitational NAHRA event, (with Bob Hux from Westminster, MD as his trainer). He retired in 1999 and became a well known Hash Hound.

In mid 2002, My Dog moved to Moshi, Tanzania, where he lived with his family--Greg, Terrie and Nicholas Emmanuel.

My Dog was buried on Makuru Estate at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro today and was sent off to the sound of double barreled shotgun.

He was a great dog and we'll miss him.

On On My Dog!
